BGS 10 Pristine Michael Jordan Rookie Card sells for $200,000

By Chris Olds

A BGS 10 Pristine copy of Michael Jordan’s 1986-87 Fleer Rookie Card has sold for $200,000 in a privately brokered deal.

The card, one of only two BGS 10s in existence, was purchased by Georgia native Sean Storms, an investor who focuses on elite cards such as these. His plans for the card? To pair it with its other BGS 10 buddy and tuck them away in his private collection.

“It won’t see the light of day for at least 10 years, maybe 15,” he said. “I’m very excited to have the card.”

The card wasn’t easy to find, and Storms is seriously interested in finding the other BGS 10.

“There are only two perfect cards in the world,” he said, noting that he’s confident that the 10s aren’t comparable to the 9.5s out there, many of which have been resubmitted by owners seeking grade bumps multiple times only to have had the 10 elude them.

It’s not the only notable transaction of the year for Storms, who works in the solar energy field, as he sold a BGS 10 Joe Montana 1981 Topps Rookie Card for $65,880 in June.

While 4,675 copies of the Jordan card have been graded, this perfect specimen is one of only two cards to receive the mark from Beckett Grading Services.

This card, which was the first Jordan RC to receive the perfect Pristine grade, was reportedly sold for $150,000 in 2006. However, that sale never was confirmed.

The card’s subgrades included 10s for its centering, edges and corners and a 9.5 for its surface condition. The only other BGS 10 has 10s across the board with the exception of a 9.5 subgrade for its edges.

The first BGS 9.5 copy of the Jordan RC — there have been 116 to reach that mark since — went for $77,600 in a June 2003 deal.

Absolutely incredible, that's a very large sum of money!  To think that these cards have survived 20+ years and still receive those kinds of grades, cards nowadays that are immediately graded out of the pack don't even get that high.

Yet another example of someone buying the label and not the card.

As a correction to the article, there have been 124 graded 9.5 by BGS according to their population reports.  124 is an awful lot to receive that grade out of the total 4,675 graded.

SGC has graded a much smaller amount of this card at 1015 with only 9 receiving a total of the Gem Mint grade, a much smaller ratio.

I see that you posted a sale of a BGS 9.5 from 2003.  There was more recently (Nov 11 2009) one that did not sell on ebay with a list price of $4,449.  There were also a few that did not sell around the $7,000 range within the past month.  This is probably something to be considered when stating a 2003 price on the first one graded.

Don't forget everyone, the other BGS 10 just sold for $82,000 only a few months ago in September.  Chris wrote about that one as well and the article can be found up above.

A card's four subgrades don't have to all be 10's to get a BGS 10. To get a BGS 10, only three of the subgrades have to be 10's and one of the subgrades has to be a 9.5

I hope that this helps.

I hope its insured. What a luck guy to be able to afford to spend 200,000.00 on a Jordan rookie card. He must of sold all of his enron stock while he had a chance.

It's better to have all 10's and a 9.5 for surface. This is because surface is weighted the lightest.

Hope this helps.

There ain't no such thing as a BGS 10 Pristine Michael Jordan Fleer rookie card.

And especially after seeing said card I still believe that.

So if you ask me the grading standards are flawed and so subjective.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.
