Breaking News: Topps Loses Players Inc License
By Tracy Hackler
11/9/2009 3:10:30 PM
Players Inc, the marketing and licensing arm of the NFL Players Association, confirmed on Monday afternoon that it will not renew Topps’ trading card license for 2010.
The move to reduce football manufacturers has been rumored for months and will take place officially when Players Inc’s current agreements with Panini, Topps and Upper Deck expire at the end of February.
Multiple attempts to contact NFL Properties regarding its plans for 2010 and beyond have so far been unsuccessful.
Players Inc’s decision to move forward with just Panini and Upper Deck comes after months of thorough investigation and evaluation of a current football card marketplace still reeling from the troubled economy. The move also represents the latest bombshell in a continued streamlining of the overall sports collectibles industry that has seemingly seen a life’s worth of monumental licensing changes in 2009 alone.
Topps officials were not immediately available for comment. Just three months ago, Topps secured a Major League Baseball Properties exclusive beginning next season.
Stay tuned to Beckett.com for additional details on this breaking story.

Well that sucks big time, great sets like triple threads and topps chrome (one of the best all time sets) won't be there any more.

I collect Chris Johnson, Eddie George and Vince Young

This is very, very bad. Topps has the best football products: Finest, Triple Threads, and Topps Chrome. I can't even image not having them next year. Why don't they boot Upper Deck. All the panini are ok, but all their products are mirror images of each other. Please let this be a bad dream!!

what an absolute bonehead move. Topps has been making cards for decades now and
you drop them and go with a company that has been around for a few months and has
been making crap during that time. Its a good time to get out!
Card stores can officially close their doors now, there is no future in this hobby.

THIS MUST BE A JOKE. TOPPS MAKES THE BEST CARD. PLUS THEY DON'T GIVE REDEMPTIONS WHICH SUCK. PLAYERS INC. NEEDS TO LOOK AT WHAT COMPANY SELLS THE MOST AND WHICH COMPANY HAS THE BIGGEST FOLLOWING. SURE UPPER DECK SELLS A LOT BUT I KNOW OF ATLEAST 50 COLLECTORS WHO DON'T BUY UPPER DECK. THEY COME TO MY STORE AND I SELL BOXES UPON BOXES OF TOPPS, TOPPS CHROME, FINEST, AND SOME TRIPLE THREADS. THEY DON'T LIKE UPPER DECK MAINLY BECAUSE OF REDEMPTIONS. I GUESS TOPPS IS GOING TO START MAKING FOOTBALL CARDS LIKE PRESS PASS AND SAGE. WHICH IDON'T ORDER BECAUSE NOBODY BUT NEW UNINFORMED COLLECTORS BUY. THIS IS A SAD DAY IN CARD COLLECTING.

If they have to boot someone, boot Upperdeck. All the UD products for this year has been average at best and most are junk.....UD Draft, UD, Heros, Phildelphia, SPx, SP signature, SP Threads, and Icons. None of them really worth the box/pack price.

Topps has by far the most loyal and long time collectors. They have been around forever and have the best sets and best affordable brands each year. Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, Topps, Finest - all these are nice cards with buildable sets. It seems to me Topps these products sell well and keep value. Other cards are hot at release and drop off a cliff a couple months later. The hobby might be better with less cards out there pushing all values down, but why couldn't they have booted UD.

Well that just blows. No more Triple Thread, Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome. Now what do we buy? I love Topps!!! Players Inc. is making a big mistake. Panini and upper Deck look to much alike, they should get rid of one of them instead. I hate this.

Its a very sad day for football card collectors. I am not shocked by this move. We have seen it on the baseball and hockey side so why not football. Why do the people who make these decisions not consider those who actually collect the cards? Oh never mind, its all about the dollar.
|
I build sets, collect Lou Brock & Jeremy Maclin. Both of my sons went to Kirkwood HS with Jeremy. I will also look at Kurt Warner, Big Ben and Old Big Red Auto's.

It is official, the hobby will die after this season, when you kill the best product, you are killing the hobby.
Topps was the one keeping both kids and adults in the hobby and putting out a quality product.
I am an NFL collector, I collect Topps and Bowman, guess I will be saving money next year.

Yes, this one was a surprise. However, the markets often have a way of correcting themselves in one way or another.
One thing all the Topps fans should consider, too, is that there are still plenty of past years' worth of cards out there. And a lot of that wax can sometimes be found at a fraction of the original price. So, while there's not going to be anything new, one should be able to get that Chrome or Bowman fix ...
In some ways, a move like this also helps clean things up elsewhere. The glut of recent-years wax will start to dry up -- making the hot stuff hotter and help the hobby dealers, too.
It's no secret that Topps has some interest in the NHL license that's coming up. And, of course, resources that had been tabbed for football could come in handy for the MLB products in 2010.
It's going to be a very interesting year.

okay, maybe this was just the last straw.
Topps has put out crap the past 5 years. they have used overstocked stickers to fill their products - i.e. Topps Magic (sure, great concept, but why does Xavier Omon have an autograph?).
Topps triple threads is the one product that is good....and it only got that way last year!
Lets see....Paradigm, Performance, Topps Signature, Rookie Progression, CoSigners, Topps TX, Rookie Premier autographs WITH NO ANTI COUNTERFEITING PREVENTION, Topps Letterman, Topps Chrome and Finest going from on card to stickers, with replacements....to jersey swatches....don't get me started on the crap they tried to pull with Stadium Club - complete garbage.
I have my problems with UD with their overstocked stickers (see Artifacts), but Topps never stayed true to ONE set. Everything had to change year after year, and they could never find that one product that stood out - until they 'fixed' triple threads. but, come on. one auto and one "triple" jersey card for over $150?
They screwed themselves. I will miss Topps, but they did it to themselves. I don't see them losing Baseball, they know exactly how to stay true to a set and give the collectors what they want - the baseball world would go crazy if the bowman chrome prospect auto would have a jersey swatch in it.

I'm very interested to see how this 1 company per sport thing plays out. It could very easily ruin the hobby. Competition and variety is a good thing, even though some products look the same. Either each company is going to make one solid product or they're going to go bankrupt because their product stinks and/or is overpriced.
