Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010

By Tracy Hackler
8/5/2009 10:33:06 PM

What was first reported by The New York Times is last night – and subsequently tweeted by CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell – has been confirmed: Topps has landed an exclusive MLB trading card agreement for 2010.

Read the official press release from Major League Baseball here.

The announcement comes as quite a surprise, and on the heels of Upper Deck’s annoucement early last month that it had secured an MLBPA extension. At that point, officials from MLBPA had no additional licensing details to report.

Officials from Topps and Upper Deck could not be reached for comment on Wednesday night.

“This is redirecting the entire category toward kids,” Topps’ Michael Eisner told the Times. “Topps has been making cards for 60 years, the last 30 in a nonexclusive world that has caused confusion to the kid who walks into a Wal-Mart or a hobby store. It’s also been difficult to promote cards as unique and original.”

It remains to be seen how, if at all, Upper Deck will use its MLBPA license in 2010. As it stands now, three of the four major sports will have an exclusive trading card manufacturer in 2010 — Topps (baseball), Panini America (basketball) and Upper Deck (hockey).

UD resigned with the MLBPA so their product will be like Donruss last year.

Tracy, this is huge news!  With Panini NBA exclusive, now Topps MLB exclusive, are we seeing the slow painful death of Upper Deck?  I hear they closed their Las Vegas offices and moved all operations back to Cali.

Lot of great folks have worked for UDA, but McWilliams always acted "better than the hobby", so maybe this will be a hobby wake up for him.

I think that this is a bad move for the hobby. Right along with the super rare high end brands. I love Topps and wouldn't collect baseball if there wasn't a Topps set every year. Competition is good for the hobby. It adds new ideas and products. Where would the hobby be if Upper Deck didn't come along with Game Used or Autos. Where would we be if Score didn't introduce the full color card backs. I thought that the balance that MLB had with limiting Topps and Upper Deck to a scaled back number of sets was the way to go. I used to collect hockey as much as baseball but over the last couple of years with the UD exclusive agreement it seems like all the cards look and feel the same. For me a lot of the fun and enjoyment is gone from hockey, then basketball and now baseball. What next the NFL agrees to make Pro Set the exclusive football card. No thanks, not for me.
I have been a collector for over 30 years. I collect Baseball, Hockey, Football and some Basketball. I mainly build sets and collect the local Colorado teams.

BREAKING NEWS: Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010
I dont like this one bit. First Donruss now Upper Deck. Does MLB know what the collectors like or want? The answer is no. We used to have choices. Different companies producing different products allowed the collector to pick and choose. Now we are stuck with only Topps. I will still put together a Topps baseball set every year. After that I guess my funds will be spent on finishing my pre 1976 sets. This sure sounds like a Monopoly.
I enjoy building sets. I am also a Lou Brock & Jeremy Maclin collector. Both of my sons went to school with Jeremy. My oldest played one year of football with Jeremy.

I only collect football and I would hate an exclusive brand. I miss all the companies that are out of buisness as it is.
I collect Cris Carter 836/2316, John Randle, and current Vikings defenders and receivers

I agree very bad road to go down. I do not favor one card company over another and I like to see the different styles of cards produced each year by the various companies. I hope some at the corporate levels are reading these comments and doing something to change the downfall of the trade.

I'm strictly a hockey guy and let me tell you the Upper Deck exclusive has been terrible for the collecting community. I hope this doesn't mean Upper Deck will be pursuing a new exclusive for hockey even harder when the current one expires.

BREAKING NEWS: Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010
To be honest, I'm excited to see what changes this brings to thehobby.  As a single player collector, I'm purchasing cards from allbrands, but mostly on the secondary market.  A smaller variety of setswould entice me to buy a few more packs here and there in hopes ofhitting my player's card.

I also think targeting theyounger audience is a great thing.  Card prices have been too high fortoo long.  Even for me, a working professional adult, the cost ofbaseball cards is high and often too much to budget for.  I hope thatby possibly lowering prices for kids, the trading and collectingaspects of the hobby return.

My only question now iswhat happens to Derek Jeter's exclusive contract with Upper Deck forautograph and game-used stuff?  Does anybody know when that contractwas due to expire?  Am I now going to be stuck collecting Jeter cardsthat don't even have any reference to the Yankees or the MLB?

I'm a Topps only guy in baseball as well but a monopoly spells B A D for everyone involved.

UD has totally screwed up the hockey segment with an exclusive, hopefully this doesn't happen to cards depicting our national pastime.........................

I collect Los Angeles Kings, Rob Blake and Peter Forsberg.

Wow! Topps has never been my favorite brand...not that there has not been quite a few sets that I really liked...but this is a huge deal.

I think it comes down to there being Too Much, though, still. There are too many releases. I can not collect every set, or even break a pack of every set. I wait for what looks the coolest to me and then get a box. Now, it will be harder to wait, as there will not be as much.

But no matter...I am starting to prefer Football anyway.

I want to know how this affects the exclusive deals with Jeter, Griffey, etc. I wouold expect a box of Upper Deck All Sport Exclusives to come out featuring Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, Jeter and Tiger cards only...LOL
Collecting: Bob Feller, V.Mart, Yzerman, LeBron, Smoke

I need 05 Studio Portraits Bob Feller variations (currently at 33 of 56, 59%)

BREAKING NEWS: Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010
Topps and Upper Deck have been claiming to be "doing it for the kids" for years now, but all we have gotten is Higher Prices and Less Variety. It's been more like "Do it To the Kids!" Not every kid has $10 or $20 a week to spend on cards. A few years ago you could purchase a pack of 10 Topps Total cards for a buck. Then MLB "improved" things by restricting the number of sets that could be produced, and Topps dropped the cheap beginner set like a hot potato. I'm betting that we will see the same thing again, lots of High-End sets with one-of-a-kind exclusives that drive up the price and drive down the value. It's enough to make a guy want to leave the hobby entirely, and I expect that some will.
I have more Baseball Cards than I can count. (Rookies, GU, AU, oddballs) Help!!! Please buy some before my house explodes! (you can Google Kelley's Korner Antiques to find out more)

Well, to me...What all this means is much poorer customer service (i've already had enough of topps' poor customer service in the first place), and MANY more sticker autos...with an exclusive, they have almost NO incentive to stop using sticker autos which, for many collectors, is not nearly as desirable as the hard signed cards.

A special note to Upper Deck**

PLEASE...this is your chance to shine in football...NO MORE STICKER AUTOS PLEASE!! Take the extra time to send the cards to the players/have your reps get the cards signed in person...then you set the standard that other companies have to live up to!

What does this mean for us Jeter fans? Will Topps be getting the rights to produce Jeter autos or game used cards? I'm a Topps guy but a bigger Jeter fan. Bad move all around.
I am a HUGE Derek Jeter fan.. I am always looking for Derek Jeter rookie cards and also something I haven't gotten yet, an autograph.

BREAKING NEWS: Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010
Just so I completely understand, 3 of the 4 major sports has just 1 company with the rights to market/sell it's cards?  I imagine UD's response to this is to lock up Football.  What does this mean for Razor?  It looked like they were starting to gain footing signing all those top picks from the 2008 draft to exclusive deals.  Thinking this was probably Topps's way of payback.

I am very interested to see how this plays out.  I think have only Panini Basketball, only Topps Baseball, only Upper Deck Hockey, and then only ??? Football would suck.  Looks like it's certainly on it's way to just that.

BREAKING NEWS: Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010
Hi guys

Well i'm what you call an all sports collector and i agree whats with this exclusive garbage,i thought we lived in a free market system, and we wonder why our economic system is taking a hit these days.

first to blame is the nfl, mlb, nhl, nba.how greedy are this RAINBOW wipes?

The card companies have know idea what collectors really want,as the people working for them are accountants and not collectors.

example i emailed ud told they should start inserting old time inserts such as they did in the 60's and 70's and asked them to send me a set and guess what there doing in 2010 opc hockey and do you think i'll ever get a thank you or a set ,Losers.

lets all not buy any product for 2010,lets all collect cards from the past for 1 year and i bet you will see this exclusive garbage disapate.

got em got em need em,what happened to that.with the internet it should be esayer than a school yard trade.

we control not them supply and demand remember abcdefg.....etc its that easy.

Maurizio.

BREAKING NEWS: Topps Lands MLB Exclusive for 2010
Sad day for kids honestly. When I was a kid there was two brands of cards for baseball donruss and topps and that was 1985-1988 and look at those sets you can hardly sell them for $7. People like the Short prints, errors, 1/1, refractors, etc. On top that they love there favorite player. Most people will track down every brand of card from there fav players rookie year. This makes it boring and only one brand. I hope they get enough feedback to stop this intime. I will says sports are some what greedier each year. The NFL wanted to have the playoffs on pay per view?? They threatened to not telivise the Pro Bowl if it didn't sell out. Come on if times are hard adjust. In 1932 Babe Ruth took a cut in his pay but wanted to be the highest paid player. Lower the price if you want to sell out.  I am curious to who gets Football. From the National it looks like Donruss Elite. They made the only football cards to give out. I don't know about everyone else but I have favorite cards from like 10 different companies. Stop the exclusive stuff or you loose a 30 year collector. My soap box and I'm sticking to it.
